Dance with Motionwear Runway Attitude

6:00 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

Motionwear LLC, a leading manufacturer of dance, gymnastics, team and cheerleading apparel, introduces a new, fashion forward dance apparel line. Inspired by runway couture lines, the Runway Attitude line brings new fabrics and unique treatments to the dance world.
“We scoured the runways and couture houses to create these fashion forward styles,” said Motionwear Designer Katie O’Brien. “Each leotard has been painstakingly crafted. Our decadent new fabric, a nylon spandex blend, has been specifically fashioned to compliment the dancer’s silhouette.”
The inspiration for the Runway Attitude line came as a result of Motionwear’s search for something new, something not currently available in the dance apparel marketplace. The focus was on stretching the dance apparel boundaries with a high fashion couture line of leotards using fresh new fabrics and exploring detailed treatments.
“It’s something new in the market, something new for Motionwear,” said Motionwear Executive VP Theresa Mason. “These leotards offer dancers a touch of high fashion with meticulously detailed features.”

Taiwan’s Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) has initiated a new fashion hub in Taipei and in other regions across the country. The new fashion centres have been established by the IDB in cooperation with three industry research organizations and a number of local governments.
The fashion centres are established with an aim to intensify Taiwan’s textile industry’s design and technology innovation and to boost its global competitiveness.
Taiwan’s Premier Wu Den-yih said that the opening of the new centres, marks the beginning of a new era for ‘Made in Taiwan’ (MIT) products.
With assistance of the IDB under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF), Fashion Institute of Taipei (FIT) was transformed into a fashion centre from a fashion cultural hall.
According to experts, Taiwan’s textile industry has earned itself a good recognition amongst customers across the globe. Besides, an increasing number of Taiwanese designers are bagging prestigious global fashion awards.
The launch of new textile design hubs in Changhua, Yuniln, Taipei and Taichung regions are believed to boost the MIT brand with improved quality, more innovative designs and enhanced value addition. This would be so, because these centres would facilitate streamlining of the industry and thus production volumes could be hiked efficiently.

John-David Mohr recaps fall trends; Style has no Size

5:36 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

Custom Clothing Designer, John-David Mohr of the House of Mohr, coined the phrase “Style has no Size.” He talks about this Fall season's fashion trends and how the conscience consumer can maintain their own sense of style with custom clothing that transcends into any season.
“If you notice, it’s not the lines of fashion which change dramatically from season to season. It is the fabrics and colors that change the most,” says John-David, a Custom Clothing Designer and owner of the House of Mohr fashion boutique. To be on top of the latest season's style, all one has to do is change out the fabric and color patterns. Switching from Summer to Fall, change out your fabric from a silk to a cashmere or fine wool fabric using Fall season's trending colors. "This way, you maintain your own style, yet still enjoy looking and feeling totally fashionable," explains John-David.
Most of John-David's designs can be taken apart and put back together-- the skirts and jackets, pants and tops can all be intermingled and mixed in a myriad of ways to come up with a style that is entirely personalized and matches the season's fashion. According to John-David, this is the difference between ‘style’ and ‘fashion’. “Style is what you do with the latest fashion trends,” according to John-David. The House of Mohr designs sophisticated and trendy, yet classic garment that can be mixed and matched to transform from lightweight fabric of Spring and Summer into Fall or Winter fabrics.
The lace and flowery patterns of this Spring and Summer are trending into the Fall 2011 fashion season, explains John-David, but the lace of Fall is a darker, more powerful color and weight to match the rich hues and chillier air of Autumn. “If you own a particular garment which really flatters you, simply have a similar item of clothing custom designed using the upcoming season’s fabric weight and colors. This way, you’ve preserved your fashionista status and have maintained your own style,” suggests John-David.
The flowers of Spring bloom into bold garden patterns this Fall. Both lace and garden patterns will breach the Spring/Summer to Fall fashion season. “If you have the perfect summer skirt, have the same skirt custom made using this Fall’s rich garden patterns and fabrics,” recommends John-David.

This Is My Dream - fashion movies on Yohji Yamamo

4:44 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

Notoriously private Japanese fashion designer icon Yohji Yamamoto lets his guard down in an exclusive, intimate short documentary film about life and the creative process, from Tokyo to New York.
Hailed as a genius, honored by entities from the French government to the CFDA, recognized internationally for his radical innovations and craftsmanship, Yamamoto is a visionary. Known for his mastery of sculptural forms, a penchant for androgyny and asymmetry, and an intellectual-yet-witty approach since he launched his first collection in Tokyo in 1977, Yamamoto has defined the avant-garde in fashion for decades. And yet, after more than 30 years on the world stage, he remains a mystery, cloaked by a careful division between his private life and his public craft.
Opening up about his artistic motivations, his love of music, and his aesthetic vision, the documentary follows Yamamoto through the entire creative cycle of a collection for his revolutionary line in collaboration with adidas, Y-3.
A perfect emblem of Yamamoto’s drive for innovation, the Y-3 label -one of eight distinctive lines the designer oversees- has created a new category in fashion since its introduction in 2002. Born out of a desire to merge Yamamoto’s craftsmanship with adidas’ technical prowess, Y-3 has come to be recognized as the future of sportswear, and it is the backdrop against which the film unfolds.

Costing pressure is impacting Gap business

11:41 PM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

Gap Inc reported that net income for the first quarter, which ended April 30, 2011, decreased 23 percent to $233 million compared with $302 million for the first quarter last year. Net sales decreased 1 percent to $3.30 billion, which includes the impact of the March 2011 earthquake and related events in Japan. Comparable sales, which includes associated comparable online sales, decreased 3 percent. First quarter diluted earnings per share was $0.40.
As stated earlier in the year, the company expects business performance during fiscal year 2011 to be heavily impacted by pressure from sourcing cost inflation, particularly in its value channels. While the company anticipated that the cost of goods would increase during the back half of the year, costs are actualizing above the initial estimates. The company now expects product costs per unit to be up about 20 percent in the back half of the year, which will more than outweigh retail price increases. As a result, the company has revised guidance for fiscal year 2011 diluted earnings per share to be in the range of $1.40 to $1.50.

In an exciting collaboration with The Wapping Project, Lillian Bassman’s distinctive black and white fashion photographs will for a time sit outside of the conventional gallery context within which they are now most often seen and form the heart of a series of quiet tutorial events led by Jules Wright, Director The Wapping Project, Jocelyn Phillips, Curator of Photography, Bonham’s Auction House, Ligaya Salazar, Curator of Fashion, V&A, Magda Kearney, Curator National Portrait Gallery, Curator of the London College of Fashion Gallery and Sue Seward, journalist. In a radical departure from the place in which photography is so often discussed, Bassman’s work will be focused within the world she so perfectly captured on film.

Lillian Bassman's experimental and romantic visions revolutionised fashion photography. In fact, Vanity Fair magazine singled her out as one of photography's "grand masters." Full of mystery, sensuality, and expressionistic glamour, Ms. Bassman's dramatic black and white photographs capture secret moments and dream memories. Twenty of Bassman’s elegant, graceful and totally original works will be on display in the Donna Karan store.

Gujarat CM intervenes on Indian cotton export situation

4:36 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

Chief Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi of Gujarat, India's number one cotton producing state has stated that the export policy of the Indian Union Government is anti-farmer one and has written an urgent letter to Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Manmohan Singh.
The letter sent by Mr. Modi insists that the Indian government should lift the cotton export ban immediately. Gujarat Chief Minister has also requested a separate export allocation of 10 lakh (1 million) bales of 170 kg each for his state. "While internationally cotton prices are increasing, we are having opposite experience at home-front where prices are going down," said Mr. Modi.
In his letter to Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Modi pointed out that cotton producers have no arrangement to store their yield and therefore they are compelled to sell cotton at lower prices. In commenting on the price crash, the chief minister said, "BT cotton Shankar 6's price has come down from Rupees 44,000 per candy from earlier Rupees 62,500, while short staple V 797 cotton price is down at Rupees 25,000 from earlier Rupees 50,000 per candy. Raw BT Cotton was priced at Rupees 7,250, but now its price is 40% down."
The Chief Minister also pointed out that while last year 295 lakh bales cotton was produced and 85 lakh export quota was approved, this year there has been 330 lakh bales production, but the approved export quota is only 55 lakh bales.

Baltimore Fashion Week sponsorships creatively birthed

3:33 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

This year the creative marketing team of Baltimore Fashion Week decided to make the sponsorship levels as inviting as the European structure that will be coming to Baltimore August 18 – 21, 2011, so they decided to name the levels after well-known designers. With names such as Louis Vuitton, Versace, Ralph Lauren, Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Lauren and Marc Jacobs, the sponsorship packages must be just as fashionable in a marketing kind of way.
In the past three years Baltimore Fashion Week has had a collective number of 5,172 guests to attend this event. This year we will have a total number of 2,080 guests over the 4-day event. These numbers include a total of 370 seated guests and 150 standing guests, but it does not include designers, production team, interns/volunteers, models, hair stylists, make-up artists, security personnel, and business boutique owners [vendors].
Baltimore Fashion Week has always been held inside of a building/venue. True fashion week events are held inside of a European Structure, known to many as the “tent.” Last year, the decision was made to move the event from inside of a building/venue to a structure. Enhancing this event to this level meant having the professionals to perform this task, so the event service professionals of Karl’s Events will also be erecting our structure.

Ester sunshine lifts retailing; Royal Wedding feel good factor

3:26 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

UK retail sales values were up 5.2% on a like-for-like basis from April 2010, when sales had fallen 2.3% as only Easter Sunday and Monday fell into the April trading period. This year all of Easter was in April's trading period. On a total basis, sales were up 6.9%, against a 0.2% decrease in April 2010.
Food sales returned to growth after March's Easter-distorted fall. Clothing and footwear benefited from the warm weather, as did outdoor DIY and leisure. But indoor products suffered, with big-ticket items hardest hit and often promotion-led, amid continued consumer uncertainty about job and income prospects.
Non-food non-store (internet, mail-order and phone) sales growth picked up in April. Sales were 13.7% higher than a year ago, recovering from the exceptionally small 7.5% gain in March. Taking the two months together, underlying growth was little changed from earlier this year.
Stephen Robertson, Director General, British Retail Consortium, said:

"Easter and the Royal Wedding bank holiday provided a badly needed boost to many retailers during April. ‘Sun made of Stars’ a new symbol of European Fashion Council

4:33 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

21 projects by artists from 7 countries, including representatives from South Africa and the U.S. were the nominated proposals for final voting held in April this year for the international competition for an overall identity of the European Fashion Council. Presidential Council composed of 18 Member States gave its full attention on each one, given the importance of the final choice – to represent in one visual, text and music symbol not only the European Fashion Institution, but also the interests of the European Commission and European Parliament in the field of fashion, fashion design and creative industries.
With most votes received, and undaubtfully with its design, force and magnetism, the project by the Dutch designer Frank VERSPOOR eliminated all competition and determined the direction for the development of the overall visual identity of the European Fashion Council. "With the logo image I see a sun made of stars." the author specifies. "The 3 rings of 12 stars illustrate another dimension of activity inside the original EU 12 star logo; they illustrate the activity of EFC inside the EU. As a logo it has richness and luxury feeling." It also shows the Unity and the strong successful intentional leadership of the European Fashion Industry! The project of Frank VERSPOOR adds another pearl in the multifaceted career of the gifted jeweler, graphic designer, owner of the World fashion calendar COSMOWORLS, Humanitarian Media, Internet Yellow, Blue, Red – the New World Color TV channels. For the pride of the EFC he is its member responsible for promotion of European Design and Creativity!
With the same compelling force, but expressed in words, the project of the Bulgarian, Nadya VALEVA, was a winner. "Union of arts and ideas" is the slogan, which expresses and shows to the fullest the nature and mission of the European Fashion Council – to be an ambassador of the creators of culture, art and education, in politics, economy, sports, humanitarian, environmental and charity work through the united strength of Fashion and Fashion Design. On the other hand the deep meaning of the slogan, which will be presented in English and French, shows the entrepreneurship of the European fashion institution. Expresses its potential to realize public ideas, causes, to preserve values and developed on a grand scale the goals and ideals of the European and World community for peace, beauty and harmony, for a clean and ethical world, because they bring with their meaning cultural and economic growth not only for the member states of the European Fashion Council, but also for its partners.

A-listers such as Fergie turn to Bowes for haute streetwea

5:33 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

A-listers like Fergie,Tommy Lee,Alicia Keys, Nina Dobrev & Pink, turn to Aussie Designer Nicholas Bowes & his Luxe Streetwear line Krma Clothing.
Over the last decade, young designers have popped up all over Los Angeles. Like the world of reality celebrities and their phenomenal pop culture influence, Los Angeles is finally emerging from fashion’s underdog to fashion’s MVP.
This could certainly earn tinsel-town the title of North America’s West End, as in London’s iconic incubator district, where influential young Brit’s in the 70’s & 80’s challenged and changed an entire fashion establishment forever. Now with Los Angeles’ in flux of young international brands banking on a piece of American pie, (sales and celebs) LA has truly become the platform for what’s next in fashion.
Australian born, now Los Angeles based designer Nicholas Bowes, who recently appeared on “America’s Next Great Restaurant” and his street cult-chic line KRMA, (Kangaroos Roam Mainland Australia) has certainly made LA’s who’s next radar. No stranger to the fashion world, Bowes began his career as a model in the late 90’s, but soon cultivated his fashion interests into designing vintage graphic tees.
After relocating to Los Angeles in 2006, Bowes has expanded his down under tees to wear with his now perfect wovens, rock star leather leggings, and his iconic cropped leather jackets that Pink and Alicia Keyes just can’t stop wearing. Add Adrian Grenier, Fergie and Bowes’ gal pal Nina Dobrev to KRMA’s roster of fans, and you have a brand that’s become a cult celebrity must have. Dobrev loves the KRMA line so much, she has approached Bowes to collaborate on a capsule collection of sexy leather jackets.
