Coloration specialist DyStar moves ahead

2:22 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

DyStar continues to move ahead of expectations in a tough market, gaining market share and substantially improving on last year’s earnings. All this has taken place in the face of falling market demand and rising cotton costs, as well as wider issues such as the tsunami in Japan in March, political unrest in the Middle East, floods in Thailand in November and ongoing economic instability across the US and Europe.

As its competitors start to embark upon organisational change, DyStar’s own major restructuring will be finalised shortly and is already paying off. The group has successfully transferred production from Germany to China, India, Indonesia and Japan, and its realigned sales and distribution channel in China has achieved higher-than-expected returns in its first months of operation.

The group has enjoyed a busy 2011. It has launched and completed its first global sustainability reporting project, reinforcing a philosophy that has always existed in the company. It has opened a liaison office in Bangladesh and a global auxiliary competence center in Thailand. And it has held a series of ecology & sustainability / best practice seminars in Bangladesh and India.

There has been plenty of activity to extend products and services too. This year brought the launch of the Levafix Dark Blue CA and the Lava Dye Colored Denim Concept. DyStar has shared high-level ecology and sustainability knowledge through a range of platforms, including its Sustainability in Textile Processing booklet, econfidence hangtag programmes, conferences and trade shows such as ITMA.

Ceraspace by Schoeller Textil offers terrific protection

4:51 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

The new ceraspace technology from Schoeller Textil AG opens up a new dimension in abrasion proofing and heat resistance. The ceraspace technology displays three times higher abrasion resistance than those of leather and is in addition extremely resistant to contact heat.Link
The new ceraspace technology from Schoeller owes its outstanding protective properties to a unique composition of special ceramic particles anchored in a polymer matrix. The special ceramic particles are nearly as hard as diamonds and are firmly attached as a 3-dimensional coating to the textile.

A textile with ceraspace proves to perform significantly higher than high quality leather in terms of abrasion (it wears out significantly slower in the the Schopper Abrasion tester –tested with abrasive paper P280 grid).

A second test, the Fall Simulator Test simulates a fall from a motorcycle and damages to the textile after the fall are evaluated. With ceraspace technology, the tested sample supported several crashes at 120 km/h.

Bayer CropScience and Performance Plants sign license agreement on cotton yield improvement

1:30 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

Bayer CropScience AG and Performance Plants Inc. (PPI) have entered into a research and commercial license agreement, giving Bayer exclusive rights for PPI's Heat & Drought Tolerance Technology (HDT) in cotton.

Bayer will leverage this breakthrough technology, which preserves yield by enhancing plants’ tolerance to heat, drought or combined stress. HDT plants achieved significantly higher yields when faced with periods of hot and dry growing conditions in the critical stages of development.

This is the second research and commercial agreement both companies have entered into with each other within the last two years. In 2009, Bayer licensed PPI’s leading Yield Protection Technology (YPT) for their product development and commercialization of drought tolerant cotton. YPT offers protection against yield losses sustained under suboptimal rainfall or irrigation without yield drag under well-watered growing conditions.

All PPI technologies target different mechanisms such as heat and drought tolerance, water use efficiency, yield enhancement, and biomass accumulation. Due to this diverse range, PPI’s biotech traits can be combined or stacked into a single plant variety for genetic and agronomic improvements of all staple crops.

Verdezyne opens first "green" nylon pilot plant

1:00 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

Verdezyne Inc, a privately held industrial biotechnology company focused on producing renewable chemicals and fuels from non-petroleum sources has opened its first pilot plant to produce adipic acid, a key component of nylon 6,6. The new facility, located in Carlsbad, California will be used to accelerate the commercialization of Verdezyne’s bio-based adipic acid, which is one of two components used to manufacture ‘green’ nylon 6,6 and thermoplastic polyurethane resins from renewable sources, such as non-food based vegetable oils.

“We are excited to achieve this key milestone,” said Dr. E. William Radany, president and CEO of Verdezyne. “This is the first demonstration of the production of bio-based adipic acid at scale from a non-petroleum source. Our no
vel yeast platform enables production of adipic acid at a lower cost than current petrochemical manufacturing processes.”

In addition to lower production costs, Verdezyne’s method for producing adipic acid offers a number of advantages over petroleum-based methods. The company’s yeast fermentation process uses non-food, plant-based feedstocks to produce a variety of commercial diacids. Moreover, Verdezyne’s production methods are expected to generate less CO2 and other pollutants as compared with incumbent methods.
A variety of products are currently produced worldwide from petroleum-based nylon, including engineered plastics, carpets, clothing and other assorted textiles. Production of these types of products translates to an adipic acid market of more than $6 billion globally.

Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, announced sales of CHF 1.865 billion in the third quarter 2011, compared to CHF 1.709 billion in the previous year. This includes Süd-Chemie (SC) sales of CHF 356 million. In local currencies, sales growth amounted to 25%.

In Swiss francs, year-on-year sales were only 9% higher as the Swiss franc continued to strengthen against most major currencies especially in the first half of the third quarter.

Sales growth was driven by higher prices and the acquisition of Süd-Chemie. The less cyclical Business Units Additives, Catalysis & Energy, Functional Materials, Industrial & Consumer Specialties and Oil & Mining Services – accounting for roughly 50% of group sales – showed the most dynamic growth. By contrast, the slowdown in demand in the more cyclical businesses already observed in June has spread along the plastics value chain and into the coatings business.

Regionally, the traditional markets of Europe and North America outpaced Asia/Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa. In the emerging markets a slow-down in the dynamic growth of the last few quarters has been observed.

Excluding Süd-Chemie, sales increased by 5%, driven by a 9% increase in sales prices, while volumes decreased 4% compared to the previous-year period as a result of a combination of softening demand in some businesses and the deliberate loss of unprofitable contracts.

Schoeller energear earns Silver Award at Focus Open 2011

11:03 PM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

The latest Schoeller technology energear, which ensures that energy radiated by the body is returned to it makes a convincing impact at the Focus Open 2011 of the Design Center Stuttgart and wins a Silver Award. The International Design Prize Baden-Württemberg and Mia Seeger Prize 2011 exhibition will take place from 14 October to 27 November, 2011 in Stuttgart.

Heat has a beneficial effect and is experienced as a pleasant, cozy feeling. It permits deep relaxation and provides the body with renewed energy. For this reason, Far Infrared Rays have long been used for therapeutic purposes in medicine. An effect like that of a hot stone massage or an infrared sauna is achieved by the prize-winning energear, the new fabric generation from Schoeller Textil AG, which once again has taken nature as its role model. Here use was made of the natural capacity of certain minerals to reflect heat energy rays.

Promotes blood circulation
With energear, a special titanium/mineral mix incorporated into the fabric ensures that the energy radiated by the body is reflected back in the form of Far Infrared Rays. This reflection promotes blood circulation and increases oxygen levels in the blood. This additional energy has various positive effects on the body, for example performance enhancement and prevention of premature fatigue as well as improved regeneration.

Advanced Aftertreatment Process for discontinuous dye houses

1:59 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

A new rinsing process for discontinuous dye houses from Thies Textilmaschinen, dramatically reduces the number of rinses from 8 – 10 processes to just 2 – 4 with, for example, navy blue cotton, and also allows the treated water to be reused.

Constantly striving to introduce new technologies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and energy demands for discontinuous dye houses, Thies GmbH & Co KG has reached a new milestone with the introduction of its Advanced Aftertreatment Process (AAP).

The new process reduces the number of rinses and the reuse of the treated water to provide reduced consumption levels of 30 – 50%.

The AAP system has been designed to treat rinsing liquor in a separate Ozone reactor vessel using active oxygen to destroy the molecular structure of the dye stuff, removing the colour.

It is intended for use with all shades of yarns and fabric.

The system is operated during the rinsing and post treatment stages of the dyeing process.

The complete newly developed cycle for the dyeing machine to the ozone reactor ensures a faster and energy reduced online colour removal of the dye liquor without influence on the colour fastness.

By carrying out the AAP procedure in the dyeing machine ensures a dramatic reduction in the cycle time and the amount of effluent.

Intertek’s iSupplier Intelligence Program Gives Global Buyers a Clear View into their Supply Chains

11:31 PM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries around the world, announces the launch of iSupplier Intelligence (iSI), a supplier community platform that provides global buyers of consumer goods, industrial and commodities with access to suppliers’ profiles including Company Profile, Capabilities, Quality Compliance and Reputational Risk issues associated with Social, Environmental and Security issues regardless of which organization has conducted the relevant verification.

This level of supply chain transparency is imperative when doing business on a global level in order to provide trust, confidence and transparency.

The complexity of international sourcing and supply chains poses a challenge to buyers in tracing products to original manufacturers when selecting reliable suppliers to deliver quality and safe products on time.

Many buyers and organizations are unable to trace their products directly to manufacturers. Using iSupplier Intelligence, buyers can get a single, clear view of their manufacturing partners, resulting in a complete and up-to-date understanding of their business investments, capabilities and credentials.

Mr. Rajesh Saigal, Managing Director, Intertek India, said, “iSupplier Intelligence provides enhanced insight into the identities, policies and processes of supplier partners, enabling buyers to improve business performance and preserve their brand reputations by increasing the success potential of supplier relationship.”

BASF to build new SAP plants in Brazil & China

BASF is strengthening its position in the superabsorbent polymers (SAP) market with investments in local production sites in fast growing emerging markets. In South America, BASF will build a SAP plant in Camaçari, Brazil with an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons.

Production is expected to start in late 2014. In China, BASF-YPC Company Limited, a 50-50 joint venture between BASF and Sinopec, plans to start construction of a 60,000-metric-ton SAP plant at its Verbund site in Nanjing in mid 2012. Commercial production is planned for the beginning of 2014.

“With these two new projects, we will accompany the rapid growth of the emerging markets in South America and China,” said Gabriel Tanbourgi, President of BASF’s Care Chemicals division. “Local production allows us to serve our customers more flexibly and reliably.”

The investments in Brazil and China underline BASF’s long-term commitment to its customers and the emerging markets. “Both plants will be built with our latest state-of-the-art technology and have the advantage that they are planned to be backwards integrated into acrylic acid,” said Teressa Szelest, Senior Vice President of the Global Business Unit Hygiene.

New Method cleans up textile industry's most dangerous chemicals

4:33 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

Textile dying is one of the most environmentally hazardous aspects of the textile industry. During dying, harmful chemicals that are difficult to break down are released, all too often into rivers and agricultural land. However, Maria Jonstrup, a doctoral student in Biotechnology at Lund University, has developed a new, environmentally friendly purification process which leaves only clean water. The findings are presented in Maria Jonstrup’s thesis.

The research is so far only research, and has therefore only been tested in the laboratory, but Maria Jonstrup is optimistic about its future potential.

“In the long term it should be possible for textile factories in India, China and Bangladesh to use the technique. If it works on a laboratory scale it is quite likely that it will also work in a real-life situation”, she says.

While working on her thesis, she has conducted experiments with both fungal enzymes and bacteria from the drains at textile industry and municipal wastewater treatment plants. However, it was only when she combined two different types of purification process, one biological and one chemical, that the breakthrough came.

China disadvantages Wyoming soda ash manufacturers through unfair trade practices

2:12 AM by Textile Industry · 0 comments

U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., said the U.S. needs to go farther in addressing unfair trade practices that disadvantage Wyoming soda ash producers.

During a speech on the Senate floor, Enzi highlighted the recent efforts by Congress and U.S. officials to pressure China on its Value-Added Tax (VAT) rebate for soda ash.

“There are additional policies that our government needs to continue to press that disadvantage U.S. exporters including China’s VAT rebate on soda ash. Wyoming soda ash producers can compete with the best but not when other nations stack the deck.”

China currently provides a 9% rebate for soda ash exports on its 17% Value-Added Tax. The rebate is provided to its domestic manufacturers as an artificial incentive to export more soda ash. Without this incentive, China soda ash producers would be forced to compete more fairly in the global market.

Enzi’s remarks were part of the debate on a bill designed to persuade China to stop undervaluing its currency.

Freshpair to celebrate ‘National Underwear Day’

5:47 AM by Fashion Fan · 0 comments

On August 5, Freshpair will celebrate the 9th Annual National Underwear Day by urging Americans to throw away their underwear! According to a recent Freshpair poll, 73% of Americans wear stained, overstretched, hole-y underwear that is well past its expiration date.
Our solution: celebrate National Underwear Day 2011 by giving away 5,000 pairs of underwear to men and women all across the country, from August 1-31st to replace this unfit underwear with a fresh pair. Sound familiar? It should! Last year, startled by the fact that 80% of Americans wear the same style of underwear their entire adult lives, we gave away 5,000 pairs with the chance to try something new.
Since then, we’ve successfully lowered that to 79.9999%, and this year, we’re continuing our mission to show people just how great new underwear can be.
"People think just because you can’t see their underwear, it doesn’t matter how it looks. National Underwear Day changes that opinion, year after year. Last year's response was huge, so we know people are open to change,” says Freshpair President Matthew Butlein.
Regardless of how many pairs they own, the average American man or woman alternates between the same 10 pairs of underwear or panties, each one clocking approximately 900 hours of wear a year. That’s five weeks worth of sweating, stretching and being sat on. Factor in roughly 60 wash and dry cycles, and it’s a miracle they’re still in one piece.
