‘We will lose $200mn from Turkish safeguard duty’ – Dr Baig

“The government of Turkey will enforce protective safeguard, Protective Clothing,  measures on imports of Pakistani textiles, Denim Jeans Exporters Pakistan with effect from July 24, 2011”, said Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Advisor to Prime Minister on Textiles. 

“As per the decision, Turkey will impose an additional 18 percent customs duty on imports of denim fabrics from Pakistan, taking the total duty to 24.5 percent”, he said in a statement.

“This will result in a loss of around US $200 million to Pakistan textile exporters”, Dr Baig told fibre2fashion.
Meanwhile, Dr Baig urged Clothing textile exporters to ship as much fabric possible by July 24.
Continuing the discussion he said, “The decision to impose additional duties is mainly to safeguard the interests of Turkish domestic textile industry. Despite intense lobbying, we have not been able to revoke the order on Pakistani textile exports”.
