‘Indian cotton prices globally competitive’ – Expert

Caustic Soda Prices, Cotton prices along with more than doubling from those prevailing a year ago have also been highly volatile in the past 2-3 months.

The main reason according to experts is the supply-demand mechanism, wherein, supply is not able to keep pace with demand in global markets and other factors.

Mohit Shah, Director of the more than a 100-years old Mumbai-based, Gill & Co says, “It has become extremely difficult to judge the future trends of cotton as they are determined by so many factors”.

“Obviously prices are quite high right now and at the same time supply demand is tight as well, so prices in general are expected to remain firm over the next 2-3 months”, he informed.

Search is on for aspiring Emirati fashion designers

The Dubai Ladies Club will host a fashion show at The Bride Show Dubai on 2 April to signal the opening of submissions for the fourth annual Oriental Red Carpet Emirati Designers Competition.

The highly anticipated runway show will feature designs from last year’s competition winners and will take place at 6:00pm on the closing day of the four day bridal extravaganza.
Entrance to the competition is open to all local Emiratis who run fashion-based business from their homes. The three winning designers will gain a year of marketing support from the Dubai Ladies Club so that they can launch their business on a larger scale, in the hopes of securing a fulfilling career in the fashion industry.
This is the first year that The Dubai Ladies Club has chosen to launch the competition at the annual bridal event, which runs from 30 March to 2 April in the Sheikh Saeed Halls of the Dubai International Conference and Exhibition Centre.
Daphne Cota, Exhibition Manager of The Bride Show Dubai says that the well-trafficked event is a natural setting for an Emirati fashion talent competition.

Paul Costelloe appeals to workwear sector – ‘give me a call’

One of Britain’s most well-established fashion designers said he can’t wait to swap the runways of London Fashion Week for the runways of Heathrow and Gatwick to design clothes for the workwear sector, including airlines and banks.

Paul Costelloe has told the organisers of the upcoming Workwear and Corporate Clothing Show, that he wants to design corporatewear and bring a sense of ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the sector which he feels lacks a spark of creativity in places.

Workers who are used to wearing outfits designed for function and practicality could soon be able to boast that it is also a Paul Costelloe.

And he made a direct appeal to the corporatewear industry to ‘Pick up the phone and call me’. He said: “It’s important for the company that we are out there and seen as a fashion company but we can do corporatewear probably better than anybody in the world.

“Why? Because we’re a fashion house and having that fashion influence in our manufacturing makes us unique in the corporatewear business. It means that we can offer the ‘je ne sais quoi’ that corporatewear lacks sometimes.”

Going organic doesn't just apply to the food we eat anymore. Luxury apparel designer, Donni Charm, launched a 24-hour sale of their most popular products using a Facebook pop-up shop. Announced to a national television audience, the Denver, Colorado-based company hosted the sale using a shop on the Donni Charm Facebook page.

The shop, hosted by Infused Commerce, allowed visitors to browse an exclusive selection of Donni Charm scarves and purchase securely without leaving Facebook.
“Offering our products right from our Facebook page gave us a chance to connect directly with our customers, which meant not only revenue but also more Facebook fans who we hope will buy from us in the future,” said Joey Mosko, CEO of Donni Charm.
In addition to a fully functional social commerce store, Infused Commerce provided custom features to the Donni Charm Facebook shop including coupon code functionality and inventory management. Total set up time took under 4 days to complete.

‘Virus Free’ is a striking mix of memories & style at Lakme

It was back to the future for Vaishali Shadangule as she unveiled her Summer/Resort 2011 collection titled “Virus Free” at Lakmé Fashion Week.

Moving into the past and drawing inspirations from her wonderful childhood days, Vaishali, remembered her dolls, boats, paper planes and balls which guided her into different modes of draping, folding and fabric stitching for her collection.
Playing with lines and geometrics, the Fashion designer chose Chanderi as the base fabric, using its transparency and fluidity in an unconventional manner for the tunic range. The clever folds and intricate drapes gave the collection a futuristic touch.
Ethereal delicate creations glided down the catwalk. Halter tunics with tie-ups, dress with frills from the neck to waist, green tube draped with a string tie up, flap collar tunic and finally a blue and gold one shoulder long gown with gold border layered to end with an asymmetric hemlin and teamed with shorts was a regal creation.

Models of Diversity holds a fashion show at Oxford Fashion Week

MODELS OF DIVERSITY holds a fashion show at Oxford Fashion Week during The Oxford Style Show & Macmillan Clothes Extravaganza March 19, 2011 in Oxford Town Hall from 12noon - 4pm.

This event will produce catwalk shows throughout the day with at least 500 attendees, held in association with Macmillan Cancer Support, featuring an extravaganza selling vintage clothes to raise funds for the charity.
The Oxford Style Show provides a platform for exhibiting designers, and Models of Diversity will be the first non-designer group to be taking a runway show. As far as we know, this will be the only major Fashion Week that will send short, mature, plus-sized and/ or disabled models as well as models of all colours down the catwalk – we think this is very important and will create a big stir in the press. Abhishek Byas gives a flamboyant touch to his collection at LFW

Abhishek Byas presents his Never the less collection at Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW).

Calling his collection “Never-the-less”, Abhishek Byas inspired by the clowns and jokers of Gotham comics worked around their enigmatic images and transferred those toches to his creations.
From monochrome tones to primary and secondary colours, Abhishek added some clever deconstructed deformed looks to innovative cuts and showed a line that worked rather well between rady to wear and high fashion.
Texturing moved from checks, stripes, pleats and then to prints with embroidery. Using cotton, silk, satin fabric and chiffon to present some interesting contradictions to his collection, Abhishek had a wide cocktail to offer.

Essex Fashion Week to start on March 24

Roll out the red carpet for the premier Essex social event of the year; Essex Fashion Week (EFW) is taking place on 24–26 March 2011 in the beautiful marquees of the Fairlop Water Lakes in Essex.

Clothing producers announce two-day strike

“Since talks with the government have remained inconclusive, on our proposal to roll back 10% excise duty, garment manufacturers will go on a two-day strike”, said Mr Rahul Mehta, President - Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI).

“Clothing manufacturers under the CMAI fold will stay shut on Monday and Tuesday next week”, he added by saying.
On March 7, branded clothing retailers like Pantaloons, Shoppers Stop, Porvouge, Arvind Barnds and many others had pulled down their shutters in protest against the excise duty.
But since the shut-down and the talks following the same, seems to have not achieved a breakthrough, the apparel producers are striking again for two days.
Mr Mehta warned that the imposition of the duty will lead to a negative growth for the around Rs 1,500 billion industry which was growing at a brisk 10-12 percent per annum.
He further warned of job losses in the sector as producers were already stifled by a surge in cotton prices in the last few months.

ATIRA - Premier textile research institute takes big leap forward

Ahmedabad Textile Research Association (ATIRA) – the Ahmedabad-based premier textile research and testing institute, textile Testing labs set up way back in 1949 is mulling a big-jump in providing services to the Indian textile industry.

ATIRA was especially established to help the Indian textile and allied industries, more so its members organizations to become internationally competitive. ATIRA has been now designated as a “Centre of Excellence” in technical textiles by the government of Gujarat.
Among the valuable various initiatives ATIRA has provided to help the textile-value chain in the past few years, is in the modernization process of around 450 cotton ginneries. Between 2005 and 2006, an ATIRA project also helped ginneries improve realizations between 0.5 percent and 1.0 percent. This when seen in the correct perspective is a very big figure considering the huge volumes processed by individual ginneries.
The institute has also helped reduce power consumptions by 10-20 percent in cotton ginneries. In another project undertaken by the premier institute, gin productivity has increased by 25 percent by carrying out modernization of equipment. ATIRA has also helped reduce trash in Gujarat deshi cotton by 40 percent.
It had developed a prototype of a moisturizing system of cotton, which will help maintain correct and uniform moisture permissible in the cotton bale. It is now in the process of setting up a pilot plant for the same.
During the cotton marketing season, ATIRA on an average, tests around 50,000 samples of cotton and provides online results. It is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the autonomous body.

Colcci is amongst the leading fashion labels of Brazil. The recent ads shoot by Steven Klein, are supposed to be far better than last season’s ads.

All attributable to its star-studded casts, Colcci’s fashion shows remain to be a highlight of each of the Sao Paulo fashion week.

Tadashi Shoji as designer judge for ‘Stretch to the Future’

This year marks the 11th edition of the annual “Stretch to the Future” design competition sponsored by RadiciSpandex Corp, maker of RadElast spandex. Headlining the event program as the honoree designer judge will be Tadashi Shoji, designer to A-list celebrities and socialites across the country. RadiciSpandex will once again partner with the Fashion School at Kent State University where judging will take place April 21 at the School’s New York City satellite studio.

Leading the judging process, Tadashi will be joined by textile executives, fashion journalists from trade and consumer publications and members from The Underfashion Club., which returns as sponsor of the competition’s lingerie award. ‘A La Mode’ Catwalk ends on a high note

Opening the show with her stunning and elegant couture gowns was London based designer Luna Sky. The Bangladesh government’s order of keeping the factories closed during the cricket World Cup matches, has been strongly opposed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which claimed that, Bangladesh’s economy would be adversely affected by this move.

In order to ensure that power failure does not cause any trouble to the enthusiastic cricket lovers watching the match on television, the garment factory owners have been directed to keep their units closed for six hours every day during evening, till conclusion of the final match on April 2.

Such an order has infuriated the five thousand garment exporters in the country. The BGMEA has forwarded a letter to the Prime Minister wherein it has claimed that, such closure has posed a threat to the country’s business reputation.

Also, they have mentioned that, the garment units have already started experiencing the heat of the order, which if not withdrawn at once would not allow them to fulfil their export commitments, in time, BGMEA said.

All the garment firms have already made export commitments, and if they fail to timely ship these orders, it would infuriate the buyers. This would certainly undermine the country’s image of being a leading garment exporter, it added.

‘Apparel producers have no choice but to hike retail prices’ – MD, Shoppers Stop

“Apparel prices have a direct correlation to the cotton price. As cotton prices have zoomed abnormally, apparel producers have no choice but to increase retail prices”, said, Mr Govind Shrikhande, Managing Director of Shoppers Stop.

This was informed in an exclusive interviews to fibre2fashion just a few days before the Finance Minister choked branded clothing by levying 10 percent excise duty. Now the retailers have been hit by a double whammy.
Raw material prices, mainly of cotton have doubled from a year ago. This has induced clothing retailers to hike their prices. The second blow came from the budget, in which branded apparels have been now been subjected to an excise duty of 10 percent.
Apparel brands will now have no option, but to increase their retail prices or face reduced margins. Mr Shrikhande believes the effective price hike would be in the region of 10-15 percent.
